The Red Mist
Let’s explore what happens when you are not in the zone. I’ve had it, you’ve had it and you also know someone who has had it – the ‘red mist’. It is fair to say that it takes longer for some people than others, but we all have our breaking point, we are biologically designed to do so. When you have been ejected from the zone, you are doing things without any rational thought. Your amygdala has been hijacked, you are on a speedway train along the low road. The receptors in your brain for noradrenaline have been influenced by adrenaline released in your body. Adrenaline is a hormone and is associated with increasing strength for short periods of time. This may be useful for physically lifting a car in a stressful situation to save someone’s life. There have been a number of well-documented incidences of this type of superhuman strength.
However, in the workplace or in sport it will be less conducive. Whilst a little adrenalin can be useful to get you into action, the more excited you become, the more excited the amygdala will become. In this state, little thinking is taking place and all behaviour is instinctive. You’re in ‘fight’ mode and you are overexerting yourself and forcing energy outwards. It is likely to result in a negative outcome. Your breathing has moved up into your chest and your posture is advancing forward. You are being perceived as aggressive by others. If someone sees you as a threat they will also respond in the same way and possibly ‘lock horns’ with you or they will retreat from you. You may have had a teacher, a boss or even a parent who reacted like this around you. How inspiring was it for you?
